University of Michigan men’s basketball head coach John Beilein announced today (Wednesday, August 6) that the 2014-15 Wolverines will travel to Italy for a 10-day foreign tour, Aug. 15-24, as well as play a four-exhibition-game schedule while abroad.

“This trip would not have been possible without the generosity of our donors as well as the athletic department,” said Beilein. “We are fortunate to have this opportunity to improve our team’s growth and chemistry while still experiencing a foreign trip.

“It’s a great opportunity for our young men to get a chance to learn a different culture, visit historical sites, bond as a team and play some quality completion. We learned and experienced a great deal from our Belgium trip four years ago and we look forward to having more memorable moments.”

Throughout the 10-day trip, set up with Anthony Travel, the Wolverines will tour several iconic cities including Rome, Verona, Vicenza, Venice and Lake Como as well as specific sites such as the Vatican, the Colosseum and Forum and the Spanish Steps. U-M is also scheduled to visit the United States Army base in Vicenza on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The Garrison is home to U.S. soldiers, service members and their families, including the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team and 509th Signal Battalion.

The Wolverines’ visit will include lunch and dining with service members, meeting with soldiers, a U-M shootaround and an autograph signing.

“The visit to the Army Garrison is going to be a special for us,” said Beilein. “Any time we can give back, visit and speak with service men and women, it is a life-changing experience.”

In addition to the tours, Michigan will play a four-game exhibition schedule starting with the Perugia Select Team in Rome on Sunday, Aug. 17. The Wolverines will follow with back-to-back games in Vicenza against the Vicenza All-Stars on Tuesday, Aug. 19 and the Oderzo All-Stars on Wednesday,  Aug. 20. The exhibition schedule will conclude with the Mantova Stings on Friday, Aug. 22.
