The RPI is dead, but will NET be an improvement?

The NCAA announced today that it was replacing the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) with the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) as the primary metric used by the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

The new system was approved in late July and was developed by “Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, top basketball analytics experts and Google Cloud Professional Services.”

The RPI was a flawed metric and that has been proven again and again and again. Will the NCAA’s new system be an improvement? Do we have any clue what it will even look like? Let’s go line-by-line and pick through the relevant bits of the NCAA’s press release.
