Do you think the defensive approach Michigan used in the first game will be their base going forward?

If/when they do go to “drop” coverage, do you think the activity and communication needed to play a defense with a lot of rotations will lead to better activity and communication in “drop,” which we (me) mistakenly think of as a more passive defense sometimes?

Do the Ferris St and IPFW games change your perspective on the ceiling of this team? Prediction for the Big Ten season?

Seems like NCAA tourney expansion is inevitable sooner than later. Knowing that keeping it at 68 teams won’t be an in the cards, how much expansion do you think would be best-case scenario (or if against it, the least of all evils)?

I don’t think anything changes my perspective big picture, you need to see how they play against real opponents. I think there are plenty of things that I thought could happen (Kobe developing nicely, Jett scoring so effectively, Jaelin fitting in, Baker having a role) that are trending in the right direction, but we at least need to see the games next week to move the needle in any real way.

I’d say the good news is that nothing really stands out as “uh oh” to reverse course in the early action.

It seems like the soft hedge/to the level defense will be what U-M drills most early in the season. I’m sure they are putting in lots of different coverages and will mix and match depending on the matchup.

I don’t think that one ball screen coverage is more reliant on communication than another really. What you are doing and what you are communicating might change but I think U-M has generally looked pretty active and sharp in its help defensive schemes early on.

For now, I think that’s still kind of dependent on opposition (PFW wasn’t a great PNR team, Ferris was Ferris) but it is something to watch as the season goes on.
