Less than three weeks after running Maryland out of the Crisler Center, Michigan fell 64-58 at the Xfinity Center on Thursday night.
Michigan dominated the Terps inside out in Ann Arbor, consistently feeding Hunter Dickinson on the block and running their offense with ease. Kevin Willard flipped the script in the rematch. He brought out token full-court pressure, utilized a 2-3 zone and changed the game’s dynamic.
The tilt in Ann Arbor was a 75-possession track meet; the game in College Park was a 57-possession slog. Jahmir Young scored 5 points on 2-of-9 shooting in Ann Arbor, only to go for 26 points in the rematch.
Michigan could never play its game in the rematch — a testament to Kevin Willard’s plan, how effectively the Terps executed it and how much this Michigan team still needs to grow if it wants to beat good teams on the road in the Big Ten.
