2022-23 Season

Game 20: Purdue at Michigan Preview

There’s a tendency to downplay college basketball teams that know exactly what they are because they become so consistent with how they win that it grows stale. After watching 20 games, we poke and prod and attempt to suggest why a successful plan will fall short even as it continues to work. There are only so many ways to say Zach Edey recorded 25 and 15 and Purdue won again.

Purdue is 19-1 and the only blemish on the résumé is a 1-point home loss against Rutgers. The Boilermakers had a chance to win that game and went down swinging with what might be the most Purdue possession of the season. With ten seconds remaining for a sideline out-of-bounds set, the Boilermakers managed to enter the ball into the post twice and make eight passes before missing an open three.

There might not be NBA talent or a high-paced system to draw headlines, but Purdue has the National Player of the Year and the perfect system to utilize his advantages. Tonight (9:00 p.m., FS1), Michigan gets its lone shot of the regular season to try to take down that system.
