For the second time in his tenure at Michigan, associate head coach Phil Martelli will take the reins of the program — this time under far different circumstances.
Instead of a mid-season suspension like back in 2021-22, Juwan Howard underwent heart surgery more than two weeks ago. His health status has limited his ability to coach as he recovers. In the meantime, Martelli will once again lead the Wolverines.
But by nature of why Martelli is taking the helm, this substitute tenure is markedly different than the last.
“What we do, how we were doing it was set in stone — it was just kind of like a placeholder,” Martelli told HoopsU about his last interim coaching stint. “This is a little bit different in that … each player that now is responsible — not to do more — but to do what they’re capable of. Like we really can’t have an off day, right? We can’t have an off day as a staff.”
