2024-25 Season

After engineering Michigan’s revival, Dusty May commits to long-term future

Dusty May is staying in Ann Arbor.

The first-year coach of the No. 12 Michigan men’s basketball team silenced all talks of leveraging this season’s success and taking a new job as he signed a contract extension through the spring of 2030.

May confirmed to CBS Sports that the new contract includes a one-year extension to the previous five-year deal, a salary bump of $1 million — totaling $4.75 million per year — and a contract buyout price rising to $7.5 million.

The contract doesn’t just benefit May, though. It also includes a salary increase for all of the team’s staff, a larger investment in men’s basketball resources like food and travel, and additional money in the Wolverines’ NIL fund—one facet of the school’s athletic appeal that is lacking compared to other high-major programs.

“When I met with him 11 months ago and sat down and talked to him, he’s everything that he talked about wanting to be,” Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said postgame Friday. “For this team, his players, this community, the connection to our donors, the connection to the president, fans, students, everything that he’s done with the program.

“And then you look at the development of the team in the way they gel together. Look, again, this has nothing to do with one loss or one win or whatever it is about what he has brought in. I just wanted to make sure he knew how much I appreciated and wanted him to be here and get a new contract.”
