It’s been a month since the No. 2 Michigan men’s basketball team escaped Fort Worth with a one-point win.
The Wolverines haven’t played a single-digit game since, including a second Big Ten win Saturday against Maryland — now led by former Texas A&M coach Buzz Williams, who they beat in the NCAA Tournament a few months ago. Before that, Michigan took down coach Kevin Willard’s Villanova squad. Talk about deja vu.
Not much was new when Wolverines coach Dusty May took the podium Monday amid finals week, ahead of games against two mid-major opponents. Michigan is still playing unselfish basketball, earning the No. 2 spot in the AP Poll and the top spot in KenPom.
Dusty May is familiar with the flip side of holiday upsets
Michigan’s next two games are before and after Christmas against La Salle and McNeese, both mid-majors. The Cowboys are more capable than the Explorers, but May isn’t overlooking either.
“As a mid-major coach, or whatever we were, we tried to schedule the high majors just before Christmas and just after Christmas,” May said Monday. “And so we’ll remind our guys that repeatedly that this is typically, and I don’t have the math behind it, but it seems like this is when the most upsets happen, because the high major guys are usually looking forward to something other than the game.”
