Michigan’s march toward what it hopes can be the best season in program history continued on Thursday night with an ugly but satisfying 71-68 win at Iowa.
The Wolverines completed the perfect road sweep, going undefeated in conference road games for the first time in program history and the first time since Indiana did so in 1975-76.
Through 30 games, this team has looked the part. The Wolverines are good enough to play and win on Monday night in April, but they are going to have to string their best basketball together to do it.
Tonight’s win wasn’t pretty. The Wolverines turned it over too often, especially in the first half, and looked to have pulled away with a 63-53 lead late, only to let the Hawkeyes climb back with a late 11-1 run.
In the end, Michigan had enough. The Wolverines’ three-big combo combined for 46 points on 17 of 25 shooting, including 34 of Michigan’s 41 second-half points. Down the stretch, it was Roddy Gayle Jr. who stepped up and made two critical defensive stops with a block and a steal in the final minute to help the Wolverines to one final road victory.
