2025-26 Season

L.J. Cason primed for sophomore leap at both guard spots

A common conversation in college basketball is the jump from year one to year two. The only returning freshman for the Michigan men’s basketball team from last season that could fit that stereotype is sophomore guard L.J. Cason.

Previously committing to play for Wolverines coach Dusty May when he was at Florida Atlantic, Cason decided to follow May to Ann Arbor when he took the job at Michigan. His freshman year, Cason had an up-and-down season that saw variable time on the court. After playing about 15 minutes per game during nonconference play against weaker opponents, Cason didn’t see the floor for more than a few minutes during the bulk of Big Ten play.

But in late February and especially in the postseason, Cason saw the floor more frequently again and impacted as both a scorer on offense and a source of consistent energy on defense.

“It gave me the confidence that I needed going into this year and I feel like my year last year was really rough at times, and to have that to end off with that kind of year was great,” Cason said Tuesday at Michigan Media Day. “I definitely feel like stuff is starting to click. But also, I think just me being adjusted to the system and college for a year now, I really get a feel for it. For me, getting my routine in and knowing what I got to do is really what helped make that work.”
