2024-25 Season

Michigan gearing up for high-stakes rivalry showdown with Michigan State

If there’s one game to circle on Michigan’s calendar each year, it’s the rivalry matchup between the Wolverines and the Spartans. This season, the series couldn’t come at a more pivotal moment on both team’s schedules.

No. 12 Michigan (20-5, 12-2 Big Ten) and No. 14 Michigan State (20-5, 11-3) face off in Ann Arbor for the first of two games in two weeks. The last regular season game for both teams will also be against each other on March 9. But first, they go head to head on Friday.

Michigan coach Dusty May is getting his first taste of this storied rivalry, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t familiar with it.

“I speak frequently to a lot of the former players,” May said Monday. “To be honest, it was odd, because I started getting texts about a week ago about players and people who were coming in for the MSU game, and I was saying, ‘We play OSU first, we’re on the road in Columbus.’ People are obviously very, very excited. We know what it means. But we also have to play. We have to focus on us playing really good basketball against a quality team.”
