2019-20 Season

Final 33 seconds bite Wolverines in Ohio State loss

Given some time to cool down, Juwan Howard still didn’t understand.

With 33 seconds to go in Tuesday night’s game, Ohio State’s Kyle Young was called for a foul when Zavier Simpson drove to the basket. In an ensuing timeout, the referees went to the reply monitor.

What they saw was Simpson falling down while shooting, and extending his right arm into Young’s jersey, right at the sternum. As Simpson went down, the jersey ripped — as the play got reviewed, Young would change into a No. 50 jersey with no name on the back.

At the end of it all, Simpson was assessed a flagrant 1. Howard threw his arms, then tossed off his jacket. Simpson and Young both made each of their free throws. On the ensuing Ohio State possession, CJ Walker got fouled and made both free throws. They would be the last points in an eventual 61-58 win for the Buckeyes, the kind of Tuesday night Big Ten game that Michigan can’t seem to win lately.
