For the Michigan men’s basketball team, Selection Sunday marked a chance to both reflect on a season worth celebrating and gear up for a run it hopes will follow suit. The Wolverines were picked as a No. 1 seed in the East Region, slated to face the winner of a play-in game between Mount St. Mary’s and Texas Southern.
As a collective, the recognition marked the culmination of a journey that began, in earnest, last March, when the NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19. Sunday affirmed that the road Michigan took — one that included uncertainties about the existence of a season, countless restrictions and protocols, a mid-season shutdown and plenty in between — was worth the challenges.
“It’s been a very long journey, at times it’s been stressful, but there have been a lot of highs outweighing the lows,” Michigan coach Juwan Howard said. “For everything we dealt with, our guys have really competed so hard, so they deserve to be in this position right now.”
