Michigan in pursuit of Providence de-commit Drew Fielder

Update: Fielder is following Ed Cooley to Georgetown

Drew Fielder originally committed to Providence in September, and he remained steadfast in his commitment until just last week: Ed Cooley’s departure to become the new head coach at Georgetown spurred Fielder to decommit, reopening a coveted recruitment.

The Friars granted Fielder a release from his National Letter of Intent last Tuesday. Almost immediately, Juwan Howard reached out to express interest in Fielder, a four-star recruit and lanky stretch big.

It didn’t take long for Fielder and Michigan’s coaching staff to forge a relationship.

“It’s been really good,” Julius Von Hanzlik, Fielder’s high school coach at Southern California Academy, told UM Hoops Monday evening. “Juwan’s been involved, as well as an assistant. It’s Michigan basketball, so Drew’s definitely excited that they’re recruiting him. I think (Phil) Martelli’s doing a great job, just breaking down everything as far as offense and defense and kinda letting us know where he fits.”
