This weekend of college basketball isn’t short on high-profile matchups — Wisconsin-Purdue, Duke-North Carolina, Houston-Kansas, and Tennessee-Kentucky are among the headliners — but there will also be a battle at the bottom of the Big Ten in Ann Arbor.
The Wolverines host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (Saturday, 4:00 p.m., BTN) in a battle to get out of last place between two teams that don’t have many better chances to win games left on the schedule.
Rutgers has lost three in a row and six of its last eight, including a 15-point home loss to Penn State on Wednesday night. Michigan has only won three games since Thanksgiving and has dropped four straight by double figures.
It’s a battle of the league’s worst offense (by far) against what is on track to end up as the worst defense. It is a game that someone has to win despite two fan bases that presumably feel like their team has no shot.
