It was a good weekend for the visiting team in East Lansing. The No. 9 Michigan women’s basketball team went into Breslin Center and took care of business against No. 13 Michigan State in the rivalry’s top-ranked matchup in history. The win came just two days after the men’s team won a top-10 matchup.
Now sitting alone in second in the Big Ten, the Wolverines have a crucial week ahead in a two-game home stretch where they first face off against Nebraska and then the conference’s top team, No. 2 UCLA.
This Past Week
In the first of two historic venues on the week, Michigan easily took care of business against Indiana at Assembly Hall, 95-67. The Hoosiers have had a down year where they have just one conference win in 11 games. With an 18-point halftime lead and consistent play in the second half, there was never a doubt for Michigan.
The Wolverines also had just 11 turnovers and forced 23 on the other end, leading to 34 points off turnovers alone. However, what has become commonplace as of late is Michigan struggling from the line as it went 64.2% on 18-28 shooting from the charity stripe. A stellar 43.8% clip from deep allowed the Wolverines to stay far ahead of Indiana — most notably through sophomore guard Olivia Olson’s team-leading 27 points.
After moving right along in Bloomington, the Wolverines continued on their path to East Lansing for a top-15 matchup for the first time in rivalry history. And the game lived up to the expectations as Michigan won in overtime 94-91.
“It was an excellent basketball game,” Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico said. “Two great teams, two top teams in the country, in the same state. It’s pretty incredible. The rivalry is real. … We just had to make play after play down the stretch. And I thought our kids were really able to do that in a hard-fought game. But anytime you can win in the Big Ten on the road, it’s really incredible.”
