Dusty May made an appearance on Jon Rothstein’s podcast today and provided some updates on how the offseason is going — one week out from winning the National Championship.
May’s message was simple, his program wants to keep focusing on the process that got it to Monday in the first place.
“We can’t skip steps. The process is much more important than just looking at the destination… We’re walking that fine line now where we just want to make sure that we’re attacking this just the same way we have the last couple of years,” May explained. “Because if we start feeling like we have to do this and we have to do that, and we get away from the character traits that got us here, then I think we’ll be making a mistake.
“We’ve studied this. There have been a lot of national champions and other successful organizations that got outside of who they are. And so we’re being very intentional, not getting outside of who we are. We have to bring in guys love ball. They love to compete. They want to get better. And it’s not about them, and if it’s not about them, then they can keep ball the number one thing.”
Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara’s decisions
May confirmed that Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr. are both still gathering information in the NBA Draft process. Both players are projected as potential first-round picks in the 2026 NBA Draft and have to decide whether to pursue the NBA or to come back to Michigan for another year in Ann Arbor.
“They’re still gathering information and making, trying to make their decision,” May said. “We anticipate that both of them are going to have a great option to be first-round draft picks, and so they’re just weighing the pros and cons of both and what they want to do as people.”
May agreed that it’s difficult to juggle the roster with such big decisions looming.
“That’s the difficult thing with balancing this right now, with the portal decisions being made so quickly, and then those guys not having final decisions,” he said. “They’re very transparent with what their thought process is. We have a good idea of what it’s going to look like, but you can never say 100% with certainty.”
