Michigan is hiring Osceola Magic head coach Dylan Murphy as an assistant coach on Mike Boynton Jr.’s staff, as first reported by Alejandro Zuniga of 247 Sports.
Murphy has a unique basketball background. He graduated from Columbia with a degree in classics, didn’t play college basketball, and has worked in various basketball roles, including as a G-League scout, blogger, graduate assistant, and analytics associate. His only experience in college basketball was as a graduate assistant at Ball State in 2018.
He’s been with the Orlando Magic since 2018. He’s currently the head coach of the Osceola Magic, Orlando’s G-League program, a job he took in 2023. Before that, he served as an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic (2020-2023) and an operations analyst (2018-2020).
The Magic have finished with the best record in the G-League’s Eastern Conference in all three seasons Murphy has been head coach.
Murphy’s hiring should round out Boynton’s five-man assistant coaching staff. Boynton retained Akeem Miskdeen and Kyle Church, promoted KT Harrell from Director of Basketball Operations to assistant coach, and made two external hires: Murphy and former Brown head coach Mike Martin.
With those hires completed, the Wolverines have all five assistant coaching roles filled but have posted job openings for two staff positions: Director of Basketball Operations (Harrell’s replacement) and Director of Player Development.

Can’t believe this is really happening and finally official. Went from blogger and creator of The Basketball Dictionary (https://medium.com/the-basketball-dictionary/the-basketball-dictionary-5c3835e9fe58) to G League assistant to Orlando Magic in a coaching analytics role, then promoted to assistant, was most recently head coach of the G-League team for 3 years, and now is a Michigan assistant.
Studied his website a decade ago and was one of the first people I ever talked to in basketball. Extremely smart and gracious person.
