Michigan formally announced that Osceola Magic head coach Dylan Murphy was joining Mike Boynton Jr.’s staff as an assistant coach.
“Dylan has earned tremendous respect throughout basketball because of the way he develops players and builds relationships,” Boynton said in a statement. “He brings valuable experience from both the NBA and G League, and his ability to combine teaching, analytics and communication will have an immediate impact on our program. Just as importantly, he shares our values and our vision for what Michigan basketball should be.”

Murphy has significant experience in the NBA and G League with the Orlando Magic and Osceola Magic. He’s been an NBA assistant, G League head coach and also held operational and analytics roles.
“Michigan is one of the premier programs in college basketball, and the opportunity to help develop student-athletes at a place with such a rich tradition and championship expectations is truly special,” said Murphy. “I’m grateful to the Orlando Magic organization for eight incredible years, and I look forward to helping our players grow on and off the court while competing for championships.”

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan David and Meredith Kaplan Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mike Boynton Jr. announced Monday (Aug. 3) the addition of former NBA G League Osceola Magic head coach Dylan Murphy to his staff as an assistant coach.
“Dylan has earned tremendous respect throughout basketball because of the way he develops players and builds relationships,” said Boynton. “He brings valuable experience from both the NBA and G League, and his ability to combine teaching, analytics and communication will have an immediate impact on our program. Just as importantly, he shares our values and our vision for what Michigan basketball should be.”
Murphy arrives in Ann Arbor after eight seasons with the Orlando Magic organization, progressing from basketball operations analyst to assistant coach before taking over as head coach of the franchise’s NBA G League affiliate, the Osceola Magic.
Murphy spent the previous three seasons (2023-26) as head coach of the Osceola Magic, overseeing all aspects of the franchise’s basketball operations while directing the Orlando Magic’s player development pipeline. Known for blending relationship-based coaching with an analytics-driven approach, Murphy created an environment centered on individual growth and team success.
Under his leadership, Osceola earned three consecutive Eastern Conference No. 1 playoff seeds. In March 2025, Murphy was named NBA G League Coach of the Month after guiding the Magic to an 11-3 record and the league’s top overall playoff seed. He also served as head coach of Orlando’s NBA Summer League team in Las Vegas in 2024.
During his three seasons with Osceola, Murphy coached 2024 NBA G League MVP Mac McClung and helped McClung (2024, ’25) and Lester Quinones (2026) earn All-NBA G League first-team honors. Trevelin Queen earned second-team honors in 2024, while Kevon Harris (2024), Queen (2025) and Quinones (2026) were selected to the NBA G League Next Up Game.
Murphy also helped nine players earn NBA call-ups during his tenure.
Before taking over at Osceola, Murphy spent five seasons with the Orlando Magic. He served three seasons (2020-23) as an assistant coach under Steve Clifford and Jamahl Mosley after beginning his tenure as a basketball operations analyst (2018-20).
As an analyst, Murphy provided scouting, game preparation and analytical support. After earning a promotion to the coaching staff, he focused on player development, game planning and opponent preparation while working with players at every stage of their professional careers.
Murphy began his professional coaching career with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League, serving as an assistant coach for three seasons (2013-16). During his tenure, the Mad Ants captured the 2014 league championship after posting a league-best 34-16 regular-season record and completing a perfect 6-0 postseason run. Fort Wayne returned to the league finals in 2015, giving Murphy consecutive championship series appearances.
Following his time in Fort Wayne, Murphy spent the 2016-17 season as an NBA Development League scout for the Atlanta Hawks, evaluating professional talent and identifying potential call-up candidates. He then briefly served as a graduate assistant at Ball State before joining Orlando in 2018.

Updated staff listing:
suede
should we read into the order of the 5 assistants there?
umhoops
It depends on what you are reading into it. I don’t think it’s alphabetical or random.
It looks pretty clearly based on pedigree/credentials and, presumably, salary. Doesn’t really tell you much about individual roles or what guys will do, though.
(Last year’s order was Boynton/Joyner/Miskdeen/Church/Williamson.)
Also, posted this elsewhere but there’s a job listing for Dir of Basketball Ops and Dir of Player Development, so presumably two hires left to go, but both would be more staffer-level.

Williamson was DPD last year right? so this is adding an additional staffer?
umhoops
Yeah, Williamson was Assistant Coach/Director of Player Development (but somewhere that changed to Recruiting Coordinator). Not sure when, I never noticed it until this summer and it was never announced.
So yeah, it is an extra staff position. I would expect some kind of former player in that role.
