Roddy Gayle Jr. granted eligibility pending appeal in New York ruling

Niagara County Supreme Court Justice Frank A. Sedita III has found in favor of Roddy Gayle Jr. at his hearing today, granting his motion in his suit against the NCAA.

The ruling means that Gayle is eligible to play, pending further legal action and any potential NCAA appeal.

Max O’Neill of the Niagara Gazette first reported the news.

A fifth season from Gayle would be a significant win for the Wolverines. Gayle played a pivotal role in Michigan’s run to the 2026 National Championship, and his experience and versatility would be a boost for Michigan’s roster in Mike Boynton Jr.’s first season.

Gayle averaged 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 21.1 minutes per game as a senior. He elevated his play in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and making 7-of-12 threes, landing a spot on the Midwest All-Region team and earning the nickname March Roddy.

He’s been with the program since August, when he traveled overseas—but did not play—during Michigan’s trip. His addition would also help fill the gap left by Brandon McCoy Jr.’s season-ending ACL injury, which he suffered during Michigan’s third exhibition game overseas.

The Wolverines are also working to add former Columbia point guard Kenny Noland, who won an injunction this week, to round out the backcourt.
