Q4 And Roddy mentioned sort of some of the things that Houston hangs its hat on, physicality, and a lot of that translates in rebounding. This is the second game in a row that you guys were on the losing end of the rebounding battle. What needs to change going into the season so that's something that you are consistently
Roddy Gayle
I think we ask our bigs to do a tough job to be able to keep these animals off the glass. I think it starts with our guards and our wings rebounding down. I feel like they're in a fight. They're in a physical fistfight for 40 minutes. And I feel like as a guard, I feel like I can help him a lot more by coming down and coming away with some of these basketballs.
Roddy Gayle
I know that most of these rebounds are the long ones. Bigs are able to get down there and smack it out. I think what a guard's got to do is win these 50-50 battles, especially when it's a long rebound. Yeah, I think that we need to do it more. Much better job of helping our bigs out. It's not just on them. Second row. This is 2. One,
Q9 Kellen, uh, you know, Tre and L.A. got held scoreless for the majority of the second half, you know, dealing with foul trouble and all that. Uh, how important was it to have Roddy back in order— in terms of shot creation for you guys when shots were kind of hard to come by in this one?
Mike Boynton Jr.
I think we just got to find ways to generate more good looks. Um, again, I thought in the first half, for the most part, we got pretty good shots. Um, I thought maybe the 3s from our bigs weren't great. They were all pretty well heavily contested. Um, but Quinn got good looks, you know, we got, we got really good looks. They, they didn't fall. And some of that is like Houston's physicality wears on you.
Mike Boynton Jr.
You don't feel as fresh when you catch the ball, even when you are open. Uh, and I would guess it's a fairly consistent trend that teams shoot lower percentages against them. Just, just a guess. Um, but I think we just have to be confident that we're generating the right kind of shots and Continue to believe in that as opposed to then turning to what's going to be a lesser efficient shot somewhere else on the floor from somebody different.
Mike Boynton Jr.
And then again, when we're not making shots, we got to find a way to get ourselves to the free throw line, get to the offensive glass, and then just be able to generate a little bit more efficient possessions over the course of time. Today we just didn't put it together.
Q13 Talk about the crowd today, just, um, and what you guys felt energy-wise. And then also with Quinn, is it just kind of a constant trade-off of what he can give you on the glass and defense versus the shots? Because those 2 shots were as— as big as any you guys had in the second half?
Mike Boynton Jr.
Yeah, I mean, Quinn's got a lot of pride in trying to make sure he's doing things to help his team win. And there's no question that he's got a— he's got a ways to go defensively, but it's not for lack of effort or lack of care or toughness even. Physically, he's got to get stronger, but his leverage offensively is going to be a weapon for us.
And so it's on us as a staff to find a way to put him in positions where he's more confident that he can help us defensively.
Mike Boynton Jr.
And then it's on us as a whole team, right, players included, to help cover for him when he's out there on the defensive end until he, until he can hold his own a little bit better. Um, but certainly was pleased. I mean, he's one of the guys I point to where he got 3 great looks in the first half, they didn't go. I mean, that's part of it.
As a shooter, you got to have a short memory because if he's out there, we have to try to find ways to get him open looks or cause his leverage to get us other good shots.
Mike Boynton Jr.
You know, in other places. Um, so yeah, I was pleased with what he did and think we got to continue to watch film and find ways out.
