Q5 Trey McKenney's composure on big stage
Trey McKenney, I mean, it feels like he almost doesn't get the sense of how big his stage— like, he seems unflappable for—
playing well, playing poorly, everything in between, his day-to-day work. That's, that's his gift. He's just about the next thing, the process of getting better. And his maturity, he's much, much more mature than his, than his age in years.
Dusty described Elliot Cadeau's pass defensively. What impressed you most about the way he forced through screens? What most impressed me the most was his ability to stay on the court in the second half. When you look at the runs they went on, it was— they coincided with Elliot Cadeau being on the bench.
I thought the best thing he did in the second half was he blocked a couple shots, which there's a lasting effect of that. And then there were a couple loose basketballs in the open court that he had no business getting, and it seemed like he got all of them. And then he stayed with it. He missed I think his first 3 shots hit every part of the rim and popped out. And he stayed with it and made big, big shots.
Q8 Reaching the Elite Eight after Auburn
I got time for a couple more. Last year you guys run under the bus off Auburn. This year you take that step here into the Elite Eight. What does that mean to you?
I mean, we've, we've really improved as a program, uh, from last year. We were good last year, we finished second in in the Big Ten and went to the Sweet Sixteen, but I feel like we're a much better team. We have a much better plan and we have much, I guess, better feeling of what it takes to win this late in the tournament. And credit our guys, they made the place.
Q10 Top seed Final Four versus FAU run
Made a run to the Final Four as sort of an underdog, and now you're one game away from doing it as the top seed line. What can you compare and contrast those?
I mean, just what is— what is the difference and how does this sort of— you know, this— I've thought about that earlier in the tournament, and this doesn't feel the same at this level. You're at FAU and you make the tournament, I kind of said it was like high school when you win the sectional in Indiana and you're a small school, that's your state championship.
Like you're not thinking about the state championship. And so at FAU when we made the tournament, that was like our Final Four. So then we're just lost in the fight, Pat Riley, the innocent climb, and you're just in the moment figuring out ways to go hoop some more. Here we felt like we had a team that could cut down the nets on the last Monday and we haven't shied away from that, we've talked about it.
But obviously that comes with a different level of pressure and expectations. So I don't think that's— it's hindered us at all, but it's felt completely different from my perspective. I can't speak for the group though.
