Q3 Ball movement and shooting
Can you speak to the ball movement, shot making that was on display all night?
Will Tschetter
No, you got it. No, no, you.
Aday Mara
I think we have an unselfish team that we share the ball a lot. So it's very easy to play. They were playing zone, so it was easy to play, just passing the ball, move the ball and find the guy. Open. So when a team plays like that, it's just too easy to get the good sets, you know. Yeah.
Will Tschetter
Yeah, I think we just talked a lot about, like, staying fundamentally sound. Obviously, our two exhibitions were, you know, high-turnover games. So for us to just come in here and really be— obviously, beginning of second half, we had a few turnovers. But to kind of come in and just really be fundamentally sound, make the right pass, take our time, and just make singles. If you hit singles the whole game, you'll be just fine.
Q5 What sparked the offense
And what was working there that allowed for that?
Will Tschetter
Popping the ball around. Popping the ball around, making simple shots. I think we were 11 for 11 in 2-point range to start the game. We made a big emphasis on that, of just getting to the rim and making easy shots.
Q7 Elliot Cadeau setting up teammates
You guys had 7 guys in double figures. Elliot Cadeau wasn't one of them, but he had, I think, 12 assists by the time the game was done. How does he set things up for the rest of you guys?
Aday Mara
Oh, I would say, I would say, like, we don't What do you say, we don't really care about it. It's just every game is going to be one guy. We all, how do you say, trust each other. So as I said, every game is going to be different guys that they're going to play better. So it's just trust in each other and it's going to solve. The game is going to solve. Every day.
Aday Mara
Yeah, I can do much, much better. I think they, they got me on those open threes, and then I was trying to just try not to let them shoot. So I was— they were getting me on my— on those soft fakes. So, but I can do much better. I was still like working and during the week and be ready for the next game.
Will Tschetter
Aday Mara, you started off the game with a dunk, then you ran down court, got a rebound, then you ran back down court, got another dunk. Yeah. Talk about setting the tone that way.
Aday Mara
Well, I think Coach is asking me a lot to run the floor. I'm trying my best. I think we have How do you say it? Like we get it out fast in transition. Yeah, we have the— I forgot my line.
Will Tschetter
You're good.
Aday Mara
We were able to get easy baskets down there just by how big we were. So we're just trying to get the ball inside. Like he said, we were 11 by 11.
Will Tschetter
Yeah, and I mean, that was like part of our game plan to start the game with that zone. You want to like they can be pretty effective when they get their zone set. So you gotta be able to beat it down the floor in transition when they're kind of matching up and they're in man. And, you know, that's when that floor is really spaced out.
So it's easy to pick 'em apart before they get set and they're a little bit more comfortable. That's a quality team. Of course.
Aday Mara
Yeah.
Will Tschetter
Yeah. They're well coached. You know, obviously Coach Kampe's been there for a while. So yeah, he's gonna have that team ready to play.
Conference play. Well, you've been through it all here over the last handful of years. It's not a postseason game. It's not a Big Ten game, but when you see something like that and experience something like that, where does that rank for you in like the non-conference?
Yeah, I mean, it's great. It's a great win. It was a great team win. Everybody contributed.
So that's obviously great to see. But knowing that, you know, now we can look ahead to the next game. We're 1-0. Now we got to go 1-0 in, what is it, like 7, 8 days?
And we got a really good team coming to Little Caesars that we got to get ready for. But just feeling that sort of explosion, right? I mean, I guess— yeah. It's great.
Yeah, it's a ton of fun, especially in a great atmosphere like that tonight. Everybody contributing, everyone playing non-selfish. It's great. For each of you guys, what does 121 points mean?
It hasn't been done yet. That part of it's great. We executed offensively great, but our— our defense was something to be desired. Something to be what?
Desired. It was not good. Is that what Dusty said afterward, or was he happy about the— I think that's what the whole team was thinking. Coming into half, we kind of had a team goal to try to hold them under 60, and we didn't even come close to that.
So I don't think on the defensive side of the ball we're real happy right now. But obviously offensively, our execution in our turnovers. We're very happy with how we played.
