The No. 5 Michigan women’s basketball team enters the 2026-27 season with a host of expectations. With key additions this offseason, the Wolverines believe they have the firepower to take the next step and build on last year’s Elite Eight finish.
With a huge tilt against No. 2 UConn coming up Thursday (6:30 p.m., FS1), here are five burning questions to set the stage for an exciting season.
What will the frontcourt rotation be?
Retaining much of its key production from last season, Michigan won’t need to replace many minutes from last year’s team. But with the addition of four-star freshman Fope Ayo, and the development of its juniors, it remains to be seen how those minutes will be distributed between the forwards.
The Wolverines’ four key interior players are Ashley Sofilkanich, Kendall Dudley, Te’Yala Delfosse, and the aforementioned Ayo.
Last season, Sofilkanich started every game at 5, but Dudley came off the bench and often ended up with more minutes by the season’s end.
Meanwhile, Delfosse was more of a spark-providing utility wing off the bench, but she cracked the starting lineup in the exhibition win over Rochester Christian. Delfosse led all scorers with 22 points and added four offensive rebounds.
Ayo, unproven at the collegiate level, brings rim protection at 6-foot-5 that the Wolverines haven’t had in years.
Dudley and Delfosse profile very similarly: Both are versatile defenders and can play out on the perimeter as well as inside. Sofilkanich is more of a traditional post center, and had the most blocks on the team.
Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico has proven to be comfortable trotting out smaller starting lineups — something that would favor Dudley and Delfosse’s versatility. But those small-ball lineups were also personnel-driven decisions. With more frontcourt depth and talent, it’s worth paying attention to how Barnes Arico manages her plethora of forwards.
