Notebook: LaVall Jordan to Butler, scheduling notes

A former Michigan assistant coach will be the next head coach at Butler and several new scheduling details have emerged in recent days.

LaVall Jordan will be the next head coach at Butler.

A little over a year ago, we were covering Jordan’s move from Michigan to Milwaukee and now he’s taking the step up to Butler after just one season of head coaching experience. Jordan was also a finalist for a position in 2013 before the Bulldogs selected Brandon Miller.

Jordan was an assistant coach at Michigan for six seasons after serving in the same role at Butler and Iowa. He went just 11-24 in his first season at Milwaukee, but coached the Panthers to the Horizon League finals where they lost to Northern Kentucky.

Michigan to host Central Michigan, other dates set

Michigan will host Central Michigan on November 13th, according to the recently released Chippewa schedule.

The Wolverines have played Central Michigan twice during Beilein’s tenure, an 88-73 win in 2012 and a 78-67 loss during Beilein’s first season in Ann Arbor.

Much of the Wolverines’ schedule appears to be set in stone at this point with games against North Carolina, Texas, UCLA, Detroit, Central Michigan and a trip to the Maui Invitational. The date for Michigan’s home game against UCLA is confirmed for December 9th and MLive reports that the Wolverines will play at Texas on Tuesday, December 12th.

The extensive travel — to Maui, Austin and Chapel Hill — will be further complicated that the Big Ten is planning to play a pair of games the weekend of December 2nd, one of which will also be on the road.

Big Ten looking at 20 games

The Big Ten is considering a shift to a 20 game conference schedule and Michigan State coach Tom Izzo appears to be on board.

“I personally see us going to a 20-game schedule,” Izzo told ESPN on Monday. “I don’t think there’s any question it’s going to happen — and I’m not overly against it.”

Delaney notes in the article that nothing has been set in stone in terms of logistics, but the move appears inevitable.

The positives and negatives of a 20-game conference slate are up for debate. More league games would lead to a more balance regular season (and more conference television money), but they also could reduce the strength of non-conference slates across the league.

CJ Fredrick to visit Tuesday

Michigan will host class of 2018 guard CJ Fredrick for an unofficial visit on Tuesday, according to a tweet by his AAU program.

Fredrick is one of the best shooters on the adidas Uprising with a 63 eFG% on all jumpshots. Fredrick also holds offers from Penn State, Butler, Xavier and Iowa among others.
