Game 26: Maryland at Michigan Recap

There aren’t many secrets left in college basketball by the middle of February. Michigan might not have any tricks hidden up its sleeve, and it probably isn’t going to transform into a dominant offensive team overnight.

Despite a struggling offense, the Wolverines still have one of the three best defenses in college basketball. Michigan playing a great defensive game is still enough to beat just about any team in the country — especially at home.

The Wolverines suck the life out of a game with their defense and then allow Zavier Simpson to clean up the mess and carry them to victory. They aren’t a good shooting team, but they aren’t going to beat themselves or allow open shots.

There’s nothing sexy about a 65-52 home win, but this wire-to-wire win over Maryland was the epitome of Michigan basketball in 2018-19. The Wolverines haven’t allowed a team to score 60 points on their home floor for over a month and Maryland’s offensive performance (.82 points per possession) was its worst of the season.
