Report: Michigan pursuing Columbia grad transfer Mike Smith

According to a report by Jon Rothstein, Michigan is one of two programs involved with Columbia graduate transfer Mike Smith.

Smith averaged 22.8 points, 4.5 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game this season for Columbia. The 5-foot-11 guard is a native of Burr Ridge, IL and attended Fenwick High School.

Smith is a grad transfer and would be immediately eligible to play next season. Arizona is the other program involved in his recruitment at this time.

The Wolverines are also pursuing Harvard graduate Bryce Aiken, another point guard. Aiken’s top suitors are reportedly Seton Hall, Michigan, Michigan State, Maryland and Marquette.

    Coaches clearly want another PG

No sources here, but I think it is pretty easy to read between the lines and see that DeJulius is exploring other options.

I wouldn’t expect Smith to be a good defender, but I don’t think U-M loses much defensively from DeJulius leaving. He always made an effort to try hard in one-on-one defensive situations – as was good at trying to make it clear that he was trying hard – but he wasn’t great off the ball and made some of the same mistakes late in the year that he did early in the season (going under screens, etc.)

With Aiken off the board, we’re not going to get anyone to come in and start at PG next year. We need a guy who can add ballhandling to the roster, and who can give us 15 quality minutes off the bench. I think Smith can be that guy.
