2020-21 Season

With tougher tests looming, Michigan has faith in Dickinson to continue dominance

A year later, Phil Martelli distinctly remembers the moment Hunter Dickinson told him he was coming to Michigan. More importantly, he remembers what Dickinson did next.

In explaining his decision, the freshman center pointed at Juwan Howard and told him, “You can coach me to be great.” It’s a simple sentiment and a basic tenet of any college decision. But in Martelli’s 36 years of college coaching, it was a unique moment.

“Most of these announcements are about the kid’s gifting you with his presence in your program,” he said over Zoom on Tuesday.

That wasn’t Dickinson. And seven games into the freshman center’s college career, Martelli attributes his early success to that focus on improvement.
