In his press conference early Saturday morning, Juwan Howard stressed the importance of this trip for his team to come together as a group and start to bond. Away from the distractions of home, avoiding the temptations of Las Vegas, and locking in for a business trip.
He knows how important these trips can be for a team to come together early in the season, and he knows this group is just starting the process. The Wolverines took their first step to get back on track with a 74-61 victory over UNLV that tipped after 1 a.m. back home.
Much to the crowd’s delight, the Wolverines covered the 12.5-point spread with a pair of free throws in the final seconds. They beat the team they were supposed to, by how many points they were supposed to, and looked like the better team.
Five-star freshman Moussa Diabate had his breakout performance, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes, and looked like a (near) future pro. The Wolverines were fantastic at times and lackluster at others, and once again, the story was about the team they can be. The talent and upside are apparent, but so are the inconsistencies and subtle mistakes that separate championship-caliber teams from the rest.
