2021-22 Season

Film Room: Scouting Colorado State

Film Room is an X’s and O’s breakdown of Michigan basketball by Gibson Pyper. Pyper has diagrammed almost every offense in college and professional basketball at The Basketball Playbook and is an expert on the X’s and O’s of the game. If you want to learn more about the concepts that Pyper breaks down, make sure to check out his new project, Learn Basketball, an interactive course about basketball strategy, film study and X’s and O’s.

Today’s Film Room looks at Colorado State on both sides of the ball and how the Rams might match up with Michigan on Thursday.

Selection Sunday is a celebration for fans and players, but it is the start of a long week for college coaches. Once the bracket is announced, the coaching staffs go to work. Video coordinators, assistants, and everyone involved in the program will start to break down film and build the scouting report.

A couple of coaches will have offense, others will have defense, and others will watch the last 3-5 games and look for recent tendencies. I am only one person, so today we will focus on big picture X’s & O’s. Today’s Film Room focuses on Colorado State’s 5-out offensive system and how the Rams run most of their plays out of the same formation – Chin. On the defensive side of the ball, how CSU defends the post and might prep for Hunter Dickinson, and how the Rams defend ball screens since these are the two of Michigan’s most common actions.
