Michigan faces Eastern Michigan tonight (9 p.m., ESPNU) at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The Eagles knocked off Division II Wayne State in their season opener on Monday, but all eyes will be on 6-foot-9 sophomore Emoni Bates tonight. Bates didn’t play in the opener, but the former five-star recruit is expected to suit up tonight.
Bates had a disappointing freshman year at Memphis, and legal issues marred his offseason, but he should be in line for a high-usage productive season in Ypsilanti. Bates dropped 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting in EMU’s exhibition game and should be the focal point of a roster loaded with new faces and transfers.
The Eagles struggled in Stan Heath’s first season, finishing 10-21 and 316th in KenPom, but Bates adds an element of intrigue and upside that makes tonight’s late-night tilt worth tuning in for.
