No team wants to find itself in its home arena on the Tuesday after Selection Sunday, but there are two options: win the game or suffer an embarrassing loss to a local mid-major.
Michigan chose to win the game against Toledo. The Wolverines got off on the wrong foot, but eventually found their way against a Toledo team that is as good offensively as it is poor defensively. The Wolverines outscored the Rockets 90-80, including a 50-point second-half effort at a sizzling 1.47 points per possession.
It was a big night for Joey Baker, who scored 21 points in 30 minutes as a spot starter for Jett Howard (ankle) and unveiled that he’s applying for an additional year of eligibility. He was joined in double figures by Kobe Bufkin (23), Hunter Dickinson (19) and Dug McDaniel (16) in an all-around effort.
Perhaps it was a building block for the future, or maybe one more hollow reminder of what this season could have been, but at the very least, it wasn’t a loss.
