2022-23 Season

Report: Isaiah Barnes to enter transfer portal

First reported by Joe Tipton, Michigan wing Isaiah Barnes is entering the transfer portal.

Barnes is a former four-star recruit who struggle to crack Michigan’s rotation in two years. He played in 15 games as a redshirt freshman this season, averaging 1.1 points and 1.1 rebounds in 6.1 minutes per game.

Barnes last played in a game for Michigan on January 29th at Penn State.

Barnes is the fourth player to leave the program from Michigan’s No. 3 ranked 2021 recruiting class. Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate declared for the NBA Draft after their freshman seasons while Frankie Collins transferred to Arizona State last summer. Only Kobe Bufkin and Will Tschetter remain from that six-man group.

Always felt to me like Barnes was Ibi Watson in that you see what he is like as a redshirt junior. Wasn’t happy that Ibi’s breakout happened at Dayton, much like could happen with Barnes.

But with what is going on, we can’t have him take a spot for with the idea that something MIGHT happen down the road. We need the roster flexibility and an upgrade in veteran talent. Best of luck to Isaiah!

I’ll be curious what level he ends up. Starting when I watched a bunch of his HS film I just never quite saw it. Obviously athletic, but never quite the nose for the ball or physicality to make it at this level.

I think he’d benefit from going down a level.
