After a pair of home blowouts, Michigan heads on the road this week for its first high-major test against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden (6:30 p.m., FS1). The Wolverines were one of the surprise teams of college basketball’s opening week, but tonight, they run into one of the biggest stories in the sport.
This is the biggest game of Michigan’s young season, but to the other 19,000 people at Madison Square Garden, tonight is about Rick Pitino returning to the big stage and starting his journey to lead St. John’s back to prominence.
For Michigan, it’s a chance to play spoilers. The way that Zavier Simpson and Ignas Brazdeikis did at Villanova back in 2018 or how Seton Hall did in Ann Arbor in 2021. It is a chance to turn a night intended to be a celebration of the hosts into an introduction of the visitors.
