Michigan has a chance to get out of the Bahamas with a pair of victories this evening (6:00 p.m., ESPNU) when it faces Texas Tech in the fifth-place game of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
It wouldn’t be the glitzy quality win-filled run through the Atlantis field that the Wolverines would have hoped for heading into the week but wins over Stanford and Texas Tech would salvage the tournament and right the ship after back-to-back defeats against Long Beach State and Memphis.
The beauty of the multi-team event is that Texas Tech finds itself in exactly the same spot. Win today, and you had a productive week in paradise. Lose, and it’s an uphill climb in non-conference play when you return home.
It is the sort of game that feels like an afterthought — played in the Imperial Ball Room after the confetti and celebration are cleaned up from the mid-day title game — but ends up mattering in March.
