2023-24 Season

Dug McDaniel enters transfer portal; Khani Rooths decommits

Michigan sophomore guard Dug McDaniel has officially hit the transfer portal.

McDaniel’s hot start to the season defined Michigan’s early 3-game winning streak, but his struggles on and off the floor helped cement Michigan’s 2023-24 season as one of the worst in program history. He was suspended for six road games in Big Ten play for academic issues, and his efficiency and productivity regressed after Christmas.

McDaniel was still the most productive player on Michigan’s roster, averaging 16.3 points, 4.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game. He had been tied to rumors of the portal since news of his suspension was revealed and should be one of the most coveted transfer guards on the market.

McDaniel is the second Michigan player to hit the portal this year, and isn’t expected to be the last as Michigan heads into a rebuilding season under a new head coach.

Fellow DMV area native Khani Rooths also announced today that he’s re-opening his recruitment. Rooths was a four-star target who committed to Michigan in the fall but didn’t sign a letter of intent.

Rooths will “continue top consider” the Wolverines with his recruitment back open./

The Wolverines also have commitments from Christian Anderson Jr. and Durral Brooks, who both signed letters of intent but haven’t announced their future plans yet.

I bought a Dug McDaniel jersey after the St. Johns game. I think the lesson is to always wait until mid January for jersey purchases
