Michigan freshman guard George Washington III has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal. The news was first reported by 247 Sports.
Washington played sparingly as a freshman and averaged 1.2 points in 6.6 minutes per game in 22 games played. He’s a former top-150 recruit who committed to Michigan in November 2022 after de-committing from Ohio State.
He entered the portal shortly after the season ended and has three years of eligibility remaining.
New Michigan head coach Dusty May stressed patience while trying to piece together the roster and make decisions on players staying or going.
“I’ve taken a different approach where: I’ll support you guys, and let’s just really get to know each other,” May said. “Try to evaluate if I’m the right coach and we’ll be the right coaching staff for you. And then I’m evaluating: Are you the right type of player that I want to be a part of the program? And let’s give each other some time and see where that ends up.”

Bit of a head scratcher but trust the process I guess.

By withdrawing is he automatically back on a UofM 4 year scholarship regardless of what Dusty wants? Or did Dusty invite him back?

I don’t know if Dusty has much say. His scholarship has to be honored. GW3 might have seen that no other high major teams were pursuing him
