Dusty May looking to win early through high-level transfer portal additions

Dusty May has hardly had the time to catch his breath.

Between a rapid turnaround that saw his Florida Atlantic team lose to Northwestern on March 22 in the NCAA Tournament, to his hiring as Michigan’s head coach just two days later, the Indiana native has seemingly gone around the world and back again.

“Everything happens so fast,” May said on the College Hoops Today Podcast with Jon Rothstein. “You get announced and there’s so much work to do, so you don’t even have a chance to really enjoy accomplishing something that you worked your entire life for.”

And after a whirlwind weekend that saw May and Co. land six commitments in just under 72 hours, the self-described basketball junkie has yet to admire his accomplishments thus far. But as the recruiting trail eases up May gets a potential second to survey his work, he’ll find that the accomplishments have come in spades.

Beginning with the commitment of four-star combo guard Justin Pippen last Friday afternoon and finishing with Alabama transfer forward Sam Walters on Monday, the Wolverines have filled an empty scholarship sheet practically overnight. To put the cherry on top, on Tuesday morning, former ’24 FAU commit Lorenzo Cason followed May northwards, another impressive addition.

As May sees it, even amid the hustle and bustle of his new coaching role, the roster construction has neared its final stages.

“Our roster is almost complete,” May said. “We’ll continue to add probably another piece or two. It might be youth, it might be someone that’s just a fit and that can look like a number of things, but we’re almost complete.”
