In the Michigan men’s basketball team’s two exhibition games to open the season, the Wolverines’ starting five didn’t play together that much. Against Oakland, the starters were on the floor as a group for only 8:03 total, and that figure only climbed to 10:38 against Toledo on Friday.
Michigan’s bench players earned their minutes in both games, as the Wolverines’ bench combined for 43 of 92 points against the Golden Grizzlies and 52 of 96 against the Rockets. In both games, Michigan showed off a deep rotation with little dropoff from the first unit to the second.
That’s an encouraging sign for the Wolverines moving forward, but it also presents a dilemma for Michigan coach Dusty May. There are a lot of different players who he wants to put on the court more, and simply not enough minutes to go around. It’s a good problem, but it’s something that May still has to figure out.
“When you’re a coach and you’re looking at the stat sheet and you’re thinking, ‘Man, we need to find a way to get him some more minutes. We need to find him. We need to find him a few more,’ that’s a good sign that you have a chance to be a really good team,” May said Monday.
