‘Whenever the ball is in his hands, something good is going to happen’: LJ Cason impresses again in season opener

LJ Cason is the new kid on the block. It just doesn’t look that way.

In his debut effort, the freshman guard’s official introduction to the Michigan men’s basketball team continues to stoke his in-game flashes into an outright flame. Coming off of two exhibition games in which he notched eight and 20 points, respectively, the parvenu freshman has wasted little time making his status in Ann Arbor known.

Seeing an increased role, in part, due to the injury of senior guard Rubin Jones, Cason notched 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while chipping in three assists, two steals, a block and a rebound for good measure. Undaunted thus far, Cason handled his fair share of the workload in the Wolverines emphatic 101-53 win over Cleveland State.

“Something that I preached to LJ because I had a similar role that he has as a freshman,” junior guard Tre Donaldson said. “He’s gonna have to be the spark off the bench and I feel like he’s doing a very good job of embracing that role. When the opportunity comes, he’s taking full advantage of this opportunity.”
