Fran McCaffery and the Iowa Hawkeyes head to the Crisler Center this Saturday (2:00 p.m., FS1) for Michigan’s Big Ten home opener.
Iowa is 7-1 on the season and opened the Big Ten season with a win over Northwestern on Tuesday in classic Carver Hawkeye Arena fashion. Iowa opened up a 17-point first-half lead, let the game slip away, and trailed by 6 points with under 2 minutes to go, only to win it on a buzzer-beating three as the clock expired.
The Hawkeyes have played the 322nd most difficult schedule in the country to date, lost their only game outside of the state of Iowa—77-69 to Utah State in Kansas City—and have non-conference wins over teams ranked 83rd, 227th, 238th, 261st, 348th, and 352nd by KenPom.
In short, this is Iowa in December. The Hawkeyes can score points in bunches and will switch defenses when they have to, but they haven’t played enough quality opponents to know what they are or aren’t as of December 6th.
