As you sit down to read this, there’s a good chance that, in a hotel ballroom somewhere in Indianapolis, Michigan’s team sheet is open in a browser tab or two. Actually, I’ll take it one step further – I’d be surprised if Michigan’s team sheet weren’t projected on the wall at some point today. The Wolverines, like many other teams somewhere in the 4-8 seed line range, will be the subject of nuanced and perhaps even heated debate throughout the day because Wednesday is when the 2025 NCAA Tournament field of 68 really starts to take shape.
By the time the 12 selection committee members break for dinner, the first couple dozen teams will have officially (though not yet publicly) punched their ticket to the Big Dance, and another 40 or so will have made their way onto the “under consideration” board. For some of these squads, promotion into the field proper is a formality, to be handled over coffee, danishes, and administrative pleasantries on Thursday morning. For others, the climb up and over the NCAA Tournament cutline will be arduous. Many won’t make it. Some may even snag a spot only to lose it a day or two later as the bubble shrinks and those last couple of at-large spots get peeled away.
I can’t tell you exactly what’s happening in that room right now, but I can tell you this – when 24 eyes are poring over your team sheet’s every win, loss, metric, and margin, it sure helps to be able to make a strong closing argument on the basketball court. Michigan will get a chance to do just that on Friday evening against Purdue, Rutgers, or USC.
