Michigan hires Mike Martin as assistant coach

Michigan is hiring Brown head coach Mike Martin to an assistant coaching role on Mike Boynton Jr.’s new-look staff, the school announced today.

“Mike is someone I’ve admired for a long time,” Boynton said in a statement. “He’s an outstanding coach, an exceptional teacher and one of the best recruiters in the game, but more than anything, he’s a great person who truly invests in his players. At Brown, he’s built consistently competitive teams through player development and a winning culture, and those values align perfectly with what we’re building here in Ann Arbor. We’re excited to welcome Mike, Kristin and their daughters to the Michigan family.”

Martin has spent the last 14 years at Brown, where he was named head coach at just 29 years old. He was named Ivy League Coach of the Year in 2019 and came a bucket away from the NCAA Tournament in 2024, falling just short to a Yale buzzerbeater. He’s known for player development, defense, and fast-paced offenses, at least by Ivy League standards, at Brown.

He had previous assistant coaching gigs at Brown and Penn and was also a four-year starter at Brown.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Boynton for the opportunity to join the Michigan basketball family,” Martin said in a statement. “Michigan has established itself as one of the premier programs in college basketball, and it’s easy to see why. The championship culture, the people and the commitment to excellence all make this a special place. I’m excited to get to work with our student-athletes and help build on everything this program has accomplished.”

Boynton was named head coach on Friday, July 10th, and has at least three assistant coaching spots to fill on his staff. The Wolverines lost Justin Joyner to a head coaching job at Oregon State this offseason, and his replacement, Mody Maor, followed Dusty May to the Dallas Mavericks. Assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Drew Williamson also joined the Mavericks with May.

Akeem Miskdeen and Kyle Church are still listed as assistants on the school website.

8/14 seasons at Brown, under Martin, they finished better than the Kenpom historical program rank. Not sure if that is worth much but it is something
