Mike Boynton Jr. met with the media to discuss the latest on Michigan’s roster, Roddy Gayle Jr.’s status and more at Michigan Media Day on Thursday.
On the roster
Yeah, I’m excited to get going. It’s a couple of player updates. Obviously, sure, many saw the news about Roddy. We’re excited about him having the opportunity to compete with us. We think what he brings is invaluable in terms of experience, but also from a skill standpoint on the perimeter. It’ll be a great addition. Obviously he’s been with us most of the summer, so it’s not like a new thing for our team. Just excited to see him out there on Sunday against Houston.
Joe Hartman will be out for probably a couple weeks with a shoulder injury. Not going to be season-ending, not at least at this point. We’re still evaluating. Hopefully we can get him back in a couple weeks. He’ll be rehabbing his shoulder for at least probably 2 weeks, and we’ll give you an update again after that. Marcus Møller’s back in town. All his health tests went well, which is obviously super positive for him. Brandon McCoy is back in town. He actually left to go get another post-op with his surgeon in LA. And so he’s back. He’ll be with us, obviously won’t play, but he’ll be with the team this weekend in Grand Rapids. And Jalen Reed and Ricky Liburd won’t have any medically suggested minutes restrictions. How much they’ll actually play, I don’t know, but they won’t be limited medically. And I think that’s it from an injury standpoint.
So excited for this opportunity we have. Obviously, it’s going to be the biggest challenge we’ve faced so far. A team I’m very familiar with. Played them a few times when I was at Oklahoma State in non-conference, and then they were in the Big 12 my last year at Oklahoma State. Probably one of the winningest programs in the country since they’ve joined the Big 12. I think they’re the winningest team in the Big 12 since they joined the Big 12, which is a big statement considering they were dominating the American right before they came over. What we know they’re going to bring is a tremendous amount of physicality to the game, and it’s going to test where we are from that standpoint. So look forward to it.
