The Michigan women’s basketball team is coming off arguably the most prolific season in program history. The Wolverines finished third in the Big Ten and set records for total and conference wins in a single season. After Texas eliminated them in the Elite Eight, though, the Wolverines needed more firepower to compete with the country’s upper echelon.
With most of last season’s production returning and a preseason top-10 ranking, the Wolverines are primed for another elite season. They’ll face Rochester Christian in a home exhibition tonight (7 p.m., B1G+) before opening the season on Nov. 5 with a marquee home game against UConn.
Let’s break down the roster and its most important pieces, top to bottom.
Expected Starters
Olivia Olson – 6-1 – Junior – G
Olson was the Wolverines’ most productive piece last season, averaging 18.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, and was named a third-team All-American and All-Big Ten first-team. She is an elite scorer and dangerous from anywhere on the court. While her best weapon is finding mismatches against smaller guards in the post, she shot 31% from three and can space the floor when needed. She is also very effective in transition and can get to the free-throw line with volume.
At 6-foot-1, Olson is bigger than a lot of the guards she’s matched up against. She is also a plus defender and has enough versatility to defend 1-through-5.
When Michigan needs a bucket, it goes to Olson. Entering her junior season, she is one of the best wings in the country and will be at the top of every opponent’s scouting report.

Syla Swords – 6-0 – Junior – G
If Olson is Michigan’s most productive player, Swords is the most dangerous. Swords is a sniper from the outside, and she shot the Wolverines back into games on numerous occasions last season.
Her 34% from three last season wasn’t off the charts, but when Swords gets hot, she is one of the best shot-makers in the country. Beyond her prowess from behind the arc, Swords increased her interior penetration and playmaking ability last season. Similar to Olson, she is a three-level threat on offense and a consistent rebounder.
