Michigan formally announced the signing of LSU transfer Jalen Reed today. Reed is a 6-foot-10 big man who suffered season-ending injuries in each of the past two seasons at LSU, where he was a team captain.
“Despite the challenges of the past two years, Jalen brings experience, toughness, and a physical presence to our frontcourt,” Dusty May said in a statement. “He’s shown he can play at a high level, and having someone with that experience is important for our program.”
Reed is one of three transfers that the Wolverines have signed this offseason, joining Tennessee’s JP Estrella and Cincinnati’s Moustaphaa Thiam.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — David and Meredith Kaplan University of Michigan basketball coach Dusty May announced Tuesday (April 28) the addition of Jalen Reed, who has signed a Big Ten Scholarship Agreement to join the Wolverines for the 2026-27 season.
“Despite the challenges of the past two years, Jalen brings experience, toughness and a physical presence to our frontcourt,” said May. “He’s shown he can play at a high level, and having someone with that experience is important for our program.”
A 6-10 forward from Jackson, Reed arrives in Ann Arbor after spending four seasons at LSU, with his final two seasons shortened by back-to-back season-ending injuries. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
During the 2025-26 season, Reed played in six games before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury. He averaged 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field. In 2024-25, Reed started the first eight games before a season-ending right ACL injury. He averaged career bests of 11.1 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 60.4 percent from the field.
Prior to playing 14 games over his final two seasons, Reed appeared in 65 games during his first two years in Baton Rouge. In 2023-24, he started 20 of 32 games and averaged 7.9 points and 4.1 rebounds. As a freshman in 2022-23, he played in 33 games with 11 starts.
Overall, Reed appeared in 79 career games with 39 starts for the Tigers, totaling 463 points (6.1 ppg) and 322 rebounds (4.1 rpg). He posted 19 career double-figure scoring games and 34 games with five or more rebounds.
Michigan is coming off a historic 2025-26 season in which the Wolverines won the Big Ten regular-season title by four games, made a memorable postseason run and finished by capturing the national championship.
