Michigan’s trip to Europe didn’t go according to plan, but it did end with a win. The Wolverines came back from 14 points down to beat Mega Superbet, 84-81, in Montenegro on Thursday evening.
Trey McKenney (25 points) and Elliot Cadeau (15 points) led Michigan to the victory late, but it was Brandon McCoy Jr.’s injury 20 seconds into the game that will rightfully draw the headlines. McCoy got an early steal and drove the ball in transition before slipping as his right leg appeared to roll up underneath him.
He was carried off the floor by his teammates and never returned to the bench. The program offered no post-game update other than that he would continue to be evaluated.
On the floor, Michigan battled the foul issues that plagued it throughout its three-game FIBA stretch. Mega attempted 33 free throws on the night, and Cadeau and JP Estrella battled foul trouble throughout.
Down the stretch, the Michigan backcourt sparked a 13-0 run that decided the game. Cadeau started the stretch with three free throws, then hit Quinn Costello for a corner three. McKenney scored next at the basket before a Cadeau three put the Wolverines up double digits.
Michigan continued to shoot a lot of threes in this one, taking 55% of its shots from deep and connecting on 12-of-32 with five players making at least a pair of threes. The Wolverines also won the interior shooting battle for the first time this trip, making 62% of their twos to Mega’s 54%.
