2026-27 Season

Jalen Reed off minutes restriction, ‘ready to go’ for Houston exhibition

For the second time in two years, Jalen Reed is recovered and raring to go.

Michigan head coach Mike Boynton Jr. announced at media day Thursday that Reed — who tore his Achilles last November, just 11 months after tearing his ACL —  is back ahead of schedule. Any medically suggested minutes restrictions have been lifted for him ahead of Sunday’s exhibition clash with Houston.

With the season more than a week away, Reed said, ‘Health-wise, I’m easily 90, 95% plus. I’m ready to go.’”

If you’d told Boynton back in April that Reed would even step on the court for an exhibition game this fall, he’d most likely have thought you were joking. Given the seriousness of both injuries Reed suffered so recently, the Michigan staff recruiting him last spring focused much more on what he could provide in a full year’s time.

“When we were recruiting him at the end — this is before we knew five-for-five was a thing and whatever — it was still a thought that ‘If he’s not healthy, maybe he just sits the year, and we get the next year from him,'” Boynton said Thursday.

“(Reed) was more of an insurance piece. But he’s worked so hard in his recovery, and he’s done such a good amount of work on his own with our trainers. He’s ready to go.”
