Zavier Simpson sat saddled to the bench with foul trouble, his team clinging to its lead against North Carolina in last week’s Battle 4 Atlantis. Michigan coach Juwan Howard called a timeout and began to draw something up for his team to run. Then he noticed Simpson talking off to the side.
“He heard (Simpson) talking,” sophomore guard David DeJulius recalled Monday afternoon. “X kinda stopped for a second and (Howard) was like ‘Nah, go ahead, go ahead.’ You’re a leader of this team, go ahead.”
So Howard sat down, handing off the reigns of the huddle to Simpson. The senior point guard — who’s started in Final Fours and Big Ten Tournament Finals, racked up nearly 3,000 career minutes and nearly 500 assists — took control.
