Florida outlasted Michigan in a double overtime battle of desperate and flawed teams on Tuesday night in Charlotte. The Gators let the game slip away in regulation, only for the Wolverines to let the game slip away in overtime. Eventually, Michigan ran out of gas, and Florida prevailed, 106-101, in the second overtime period.
It was a game that essentially went according to the scouting report. Florida’s first-shot offense and perimeter shooting left much to be desired, but the Gators were dominant on the glass. Dug McDaniel had his way with Florida’s defense, and all five Wolverine starters reached double figures. But the Wolverine bench managed 3 points, one rebound, and, more importantly, just 23 minutes of playing time.
Florida’s bench outscored Michigan’s bench 43-3, and Michigan’s starters all logged at least 44 minutes, while no Gators went over 40.
It was an opportunity lost for a Wolverine team that can’t afford to let games like that slip away much longer, and a loss that leaves more questions than answers over the holidays.
